I’m Marco Doerr. I have always moved between art, design, technology, and curiosity. For much of my life, product design and art have developed alongside each other—sometimes overlapping, sometimes pulling in opposite directions. Design taught me to reduce, organize, question, and make deliberate decisions. Art gave me permission to do the opposite: to wander, experiment, lose control, and discover something I could not have planned. Digital Mutations grew somewhere between these two ways of thinking.
I am drawn to contrasts: quiet and loud, order and chaos, beauty and disturbance, control and accident, the natural and the digital. Even the way I work seems to follow a quiet–loud–quiet rhythm. I may begin with a relatively simple observation or idea, push it through a period of intense experimentation, and then become quiet again—looking, removing, selecting, and deciding what deserves to remain. I don’t see mutation as change for its own sake. It is a way of generating possibilities. Observation and judgment bring the work back under control.
Curiosity is probably the thread connecting everything I make. I am less interested in providing answers than in creating something that makes you look twice. An artwork may reveal itself immediately, or it may take time for relationships and unexpected meanings to emerge. I want to leave room for that discovery. The work is mine when I create it, but what you see in it belongs to you. Digital Mutations continues to evolve for the same reason it began: I am still curious about what might happen next.
